November 20 – 24, 2017 is Week of Kindness in Trillium Lakelands District School Board. Its purpose is to help promote safe schools and a positive learning environment. During Week of Kindness, TLDSB students, school staff, and parents are encouraged to learn more about bullying and its effect on student learning and well-being. Nathan, a Virtual Learning student from Bowmanville, Ontario, was selected as the recipient of a $100,000 Schulich Leadership Scholarship. This is one of Schulich’s top awards, and there is only one winner every year. Overall, 37 students across the country were selected as Schulich Leaders. Nathan was homeschooled in his elementary school years. He then took courses for four years through TLDSB’s Virtual Learning Centre (VLC) like English, chemistry, math, law, and history. Bracebridge AETC Teacher, Liz Vandenberg, believes everyone can create beautiful art, and the wonderful works produced by her students proves just that. Liz runs a studio based course which teaches the basic art principles, and encourages students to leave their comfort zone through the creation of large-scale pieces. The course begins with graphite, watercolour, and acrylic painting. Next, students work on a found art sculpture where they take something they have discovered at home, in nature or elsewhere, and incorporate it into a sculptural representation.
