Orange Shirt Day:  Every Child Matters is an event that recognizes the survivors of residential schools – and acknowledges those who did not.

Orange Shirt Day is an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come.  Trillium Lakelands District School Board is committed to advancing the spirit of reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples. Everyone in TLDSB is asked to get involved in honouring all those who attended residential schools by wearing an orange shirt this Friday, September 28th! And by sharing your stories on social media, you can help spread the word, raise awareness, and honour our Indigenous communities.

What is Orange Shirt Day?

In the spring of 2013, a commemoration event was held in Williams Lake, BC to honour those who attended the St. Joseph Mission residential school. Orange Shirt Day was inspired by the experience and story of Phyllis’ (Jack) Webstad whose shiny new orange shirt was taken away on her rst day of school at the Mission. Her story and Orange shirt day has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools happening annually.
