Semi-final competition On April 20, Huntsville High School (HHS) Grade 12 student, Carolyn Yungblut, competed at the Royal Canadian Legion’s Semi-Final Public Speaking Competition at the Shelburne Legion. Yungblut competed against three other competitors from Districts C, D, and E, and was awarded first place! Yungblut will now move on to the Provincial Championships, taking place on Saturday, May 4, in Toronto. Muskoka Students Write Letters to Mental Health Community Partners

Recently, four classes of Grade 5-7 students from Bracebridge Public School, Monck Public School, and Muskoka Falls Public School took part in a mental health awareness activity that encouraged students to learn about local community partners. The activity was inspired by classroom conversations on Bell Let’s Talk Day and students wrote letters to representatives from Simcoe Muskoka Family Connexions and Mind-Aid Muskoka. “I went into classes to talk about mental health awareness and shared a little bit of information about the community partners. LCVI Student Wins Gold Medal at the OFSAA Wrestling Championship

On March 5 to 6, Lindsay Collegiate and Vocational Institute (LCVI) student, Chayton Valleau, travelled to Hamilton, Ontario to compete at the Ontario Federation of Secondary Athletics Association (OFSAA) 2024 Wrestling Championships. Over the two days, Valleau competed against some of the best student athletes from schools across the province. Competing in five matches, his hard work put in throughout the year paid off when he came out on top in the semi-final match against Mathieu Noob, with a 11-0 win. On April 13, secondary students from across the province competed at Skills Ontario Regional Qualifier events for a chance to represent their board at the upcoming Provincial Championships. The regional qualifiers are another level of qualifications required, as they are the most in demand Skills Ontario competitions. The new sites have a number of new features to highlight, including: An accessibility adjustment tool has been included to the site called AccessiBe, which can be found on the bottom left-hand side of any page. On April 5, Lady Mackenzie Public School hosted guest speaker, Scott Graham, to speak with students about anti-bullying and leadership. The day was broken out into two presentations – the first for primary students and the second for junior and intermediate students. Graham is an award-winning anti-bullying speaker, youth-influencer, and the Kids 4 Kids Leadership Program founder. He has spoken at over 5,000 schools, presented in six different countries, and has been featured in the Toronto Star and Canadian Health Journal. On March 23, students from Fenelon Falls Secondary School (FFSS), I.E. Weldon Secondary School (IEWSS), and Lindsay Collegiate and Vocational Institute (LCVI) attended an Awards Presentation Reception hosted by the Kawartha Art Gallery. The reception, which took place at the Pie Eyed Monk in Lindsay, recognized students for their participation in the Kawartha Art Gallery’s Juried Exhibit, an annual exhibit that invites local secondary school student artists to create and submit pieces, featuring a variety of different media, such as drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, digital painting, and mixed media. Fenelon Township Public School Wins Grade 7/8 Construction Skills Ontario Qualifier Event

On April 10, Grade 7/8 students from 12 elementary schools across the Board travelled to I.E. Weldon Secondary School to compete in the elementary Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) Skills Ontario Qualifier event for construction. In teams of four, students were tasked with preparing, designing, and building a scaled down model home with a set amount of materials, which were then judged on various elements, including the quality of construction, detail of the design plan, craftsmanship, creativity, safety, and teamwork.
