Literacy Basic Skills (LBS)

Pre-credit & Academic skills upgrading is available to serve learners who have goals to successfully transition to employment, secondary school credit, post-secondary, apprenticeship and independence.

This will reflect the current Ministry changes to the OALCF (Ontario Adult Literacy Curriculum Framework).

This program offers a small group setting with individual support and flexible class schedule. You work at your own pace toward your own goals, and improve your reading, writing and mathematics skills.

Thank you so much. If it wasn’t for the instructor I’d be so lost because she takes learning to a whole new level, I feel way more confident in my learning. I appreciate how my instructor takes the time to explain and make things make sense. Learning here does not make me feel uncomfortable, you are dedicated to your students and I value you very much. Thank you so very much for all of your help.

The LBS program is a valuable program. It helps those with limited computer skills build confidence and gain valuable skills. When I first started, I was very apprehensive about using the computer because of my limited skills. Thanks to this program I’ve gained some good computer skills and continue to try to improve. The small class creates a lot of one on one help which makes it a lot better for anyone who is struggling. For anyone who wants to improve their computer skills this program is definitely worth looking into. The program is free for those willing to learn. Free knowledge is hard to beat. Never a waste of time. Lastly, the teacher has a lot of patience and is always encouraging the students. Avery positive atmosphere.

To be able to have access to computers and do some online learning has been tremendously helpful and as it turns out, exciting!

I felt I needed, “Learning Computers For Dummies” when I first came here.   I just needed the right place to learn, the right tools and the right person to help me.

I was in the LBS program for 4 months.  Before I started here, the thought of checking out college courses was the farthest thing from my mind—it was totally unthinkable.  I went on to take bookkeeping courses at our local college and now I work from home with my own bookkeeping business and work part-time as a bookkeeper for a local business.

I had a lot of trouble learning in school when I was younger.  The staff at the LBS program helped me to gain the confidence to keep moving forward with my dream of getting my high school diploma.  They encourage, they believe in me and they inspire me to not give up.

It’s not easy going back to school when you are older.  It takes time to learn and sometimes the memory skills are not what they used to be for me.  However, my instructor is encouraging and patient.  I have started to learn things that I didn’t know I could do.  That has given me the strength and courage to want to see how far I can go.  I hope to take some college courses when I am done here.

I am so pleased to have met other adult students that are working hard to upgrade themselves and obtain their grade 12.  I will spread the word about this place and the opportunities it makes available.

I applied for a lot of jobs this time around, but nothing was clicking for me. I felt lost and my confidence was shaken.   I was a bit hesitant when the employment counsellor suggested to me that I should consider checking out the skills upgrading program at the Alternate Ed Centre.  After all, I want a job, not go to school!    Well, I can tell you that I am really glad that I took their advice and acted on their referral.  I’ve had a chance to strengthen my existing skills, build my confidence and develop new skills that I can use in the workplace.  I have done some career cruising, worked on improving my resume and done some online learning and been able to build a network.  I recommend this program completely.

The staff in the LBS program are very welcoming and friendly.

I like how I can learn in a small group setting.

I can work at my own pace.

"Fear of the unknown is hard to overcome.  I didn’t know what to expect, but the referral I got from OW helped me. My worker spoke highly of the LBS program at BAETC. They said a lot of people have been helped there and I could be helped too, if I’d give it a chance.  I’m glad that I found this place.  This is a good place to come to learn.

I can see the progress I am making.   I am developing my organization skills by keeping track of my progress each day.

I can ask questions any time.  My instructor is there to help me.  I like the face to face learning environment and the positive atmosphere in our classroom.
